Well developed and in good state of repair – West Kalahari sheep farm. The farm is suitable for sheep or cattle farming. The area is renowned to be a good area for livestock farming mainly due to the “pest free” environment.
The two farms combined is a total extent of 11501 hectares (Farm 1 is 8149 hectares and Farm 2 is 3352 hectares).
The two farms have above average infrastructure on the farm compared to other Kalahari farms. The farms is surrounded by other similar gracing farms.
Availability of services on the farms:
1. Electricity: No Eskom electricity available, but solar panels / battery system (2700 ampere) is in place for domestic needs.
2. Water: Water for farming and domestic purposes is obtained from 11 bor- holes (solar – fitted with Lorentz and sivag) gathered into 10 x reservoirs and 32 x water tanks (1 x 10 000 litres and 27 x 5 000 litres). The water is then distributed via a pipeline (high pressure – 6 bar) from these points to the different troughs in 40 camps. The water is of a good quality and sufficient for farming purposes.
3. General: Comprehensive agriculturally related services are available at Upington.
4. Access: Access to the farm is easy, but the access roads are not ideal for all type of vehicles. Mainly pick-ups or trucks.
5. Typography: The topography is undulating with a typical Kalahari grass/dune type of grazing. These dunes run parallel to each other which form several streets (area between dunes) in between. The grass vegetation consists mainly of bushman grass, dune bushman grass, ghana grass, etc. and other sweet cultivars. Bushes include mainly three thorn and Bosdoring, etc. Trees such as shepherd’s tree, lemoendoring and grey camel thorn are mainly the tree vegetation present. This type of vegetation is suitable for cattle, sheep and game farming. The carrying capacity of the veldt according to research and information from the Department of Agriculture is 1:30 ha / LSU (as per Long Term Gracing Capacity Map of 1993). The grazing is divided into 40 camps (2 x troughs / camp) and mainly grazed by Dorper sheep, which is also considered the highest and best use. Four handling facilities including a loading bed are placed at a strategic points across the farm. The Bak River (non-perennial) runs along the western side of the farm which provide for a dense / thicket type of vegetation with some ghana bush as well, which is considered a major advantage.
6. Fencing: The perimeter of the farm is 100% secured with “Jackal” proof (netting). The inner fencing is standard stock proof with a height of 1.2 metres (11 strands). The fencing is in a very good state of repair.
7. Climate: In summer, the temperature in the Kalahari basin climbs up to 40 degrees Celsius and higher. The annual rainfall is rarely more than 200 mm, and some years it even stays below 100 mm (average 150 mm). Precipitation can only be expected between December and April when tropical thunderstorm activity extends down to the Kalarhari basin. Then it rains huge amounts in short time, and the desert transforms into a green oasis with colourful wild flowers all over.
